Cork is an extremely efficient natural sound absorber because of its cells’ structure that works as an acoustic insulator.

Wicanders floors can easily cut noise within a room, by reducing the walking sound, making it exceptionally efficient to use in residential or commercial spaces.

To test the reduction of walking sound provided by Wicanders’ floorings, a study was conducted by the internally renowned Entwicklungs- und Prüflabor Holztechnologie gmbH (EPH) institute in Germany. For this study it was compared the walking sound between cork and different floors such as laminate and wood. The study confirmed that floors with Corktech presents exceptional results in sound reduction, being able to reduce the walking sound up to 53% comparing to laminates.

Cork’s cell structure is composed by millions of small cells filled with air having 40 million of these cells per cm³ and it is precisely this honeycomb structure that explains why cork is such as elastic material.

Valencia’s Biomechanical Institute (IBV) conducted a test to compare the shock absorbing performance of different flooring materials. To test this natural thermal insulation provided by Wicanders’ floorings, a study was conducted by Valencia’s Biomechanical Institute (IBV). For this study the temperature of a foot was measured and translated into colors, being yellow the warmest parts of the foot, and blue/purple the coldest parts. Then participants were asked to place their foot for two minutes in four different materials (cork; wood; vinyl and ceramics), measuring the temperature after contact.

Why Cork?

Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak tree. Its harvesting is an art that goes from generation to generation, done by hand for the first time when the tree is 25 years old and from then on occurs every 9 years always leaving the tree undamaged so it can regrow a new bark. It has unique and incomparable qualities which no ingenious human has yet copied or improved.

Why Cork?

It´s made of 40 million cells per cm3 resembling a honeycomb structure which protects the tree from sharp weather temperature changes. Each cell functions as a miniature natural thermal insulator and also provides above average sound insulation and shock absorbing properties. Cork is the bark of the cork oak tree, notable for being a renewable resource, with elasticity, resistance, low weight and impermeability to liquids and gases.

    Over 50% of its volume is air, which makes it very light (0.16 grams per cubic centimetre) and with ability to float.
